Grow Lights Have Grown On Me!
I had postponed trying grow lights for indoor plants even when my plants weren’t looking so great. To me, successful plant care meant that they survived. Where there was life, there was hope that they would eventually bounce back. Living in New England, it was typical to watch the plants barely acclimate to being brought indoors as the light dwindled and the temperatures dropped at the end of the growing season. I thought it was natural for plants to go through a seasonal adjustment. All I gave them was a little extra TLC. That all changed when a friend contacted me to arrange for a place to stay. She was a professional landscaper by trade and she had the greenest thumb I ever did see! Nearly half of my plants had been gifts from her. She moved in with her favorite pillow, a huge tom named Craig and too many potted plants to count. With no space to spare in any of the windows, they quickly took up every available inch on all of the tables. She promised to fit them in somewhere out of the way if she could have a day to work it all out. Hey, what are friends for? While I was at work the next day, my imagination was scaring me as it conjured up thoughts of Craig knocking plants off the tables and leaving mounds of dirt everywhere. That image was still haunting me as I returned home and opened the door. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I was introduced to grow lights for indoor plants. There were incredible, lighted displays of greenery everywhere I looked. My clever, talented friend had left some items in the back of her van the night before and they were now fully in use. There were a few tiered stands of wrought iron and a rustic one made from birch. Plants were lined up on each shelf and warmly highlighted.
There were metal halide lamps that were giving some plants as close to natural lighting conditions as possible. There were compact fluorescent lights with reflectors aimed at some of the larger plants. My mind was whirling as Karen rattled off information about T12s, T5s and more than I ever wanted to know about the Color Rendering Index (CRI). Supposedly, flowering of some plants would be probable because the red spectrum was enhanced. She didn’t stop there. She led me to the cold basement that I usually avoided.
Something was different. There were rows of shelves with fluorescent lights hanging just inches above the tops of potted plants. Lettuce was now growing in my basement along with spinach and an assortment of herbs! I couldn’t believe the transformation that had taken place. Karen explained that those particular plants love the cooler temperature and just need the right amount of light to do very well. We could go to the basement to pick our own salad of greens and herbs! I don’t remember all of the details that my landscaping friend tried to teach me but I do remember that my home never looked so full of lush, healthy plants. I’m now an enthusiastic advocate for grow lights for indoor plants. I still don’t understand exactly how they work but I know they do. I’ve seen the evidence and I’m a believer. They’ve grown on me!
